MultiNav Pro+ BLE 50km range claim - how's it actually performing in real deployments?

Hey everyone, been watching RFOXiA for a while and finally pulled the trigger on the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module after seeing the 50km range spec. Obviously I know that number is line-of-sight under ideal conditions, but I'm curious what people are actually seeing in real field tests. I'm building a long-range asset tracker for agricultural equipment spread across a few hundred acres and I'm trying to figure out how much link budget I have to play with before I need to think about mesh or repeater topology.

Real-world on the MultiNav Pro+ I've been getting solid links out to 8-12km in open farmland with a clear LoS path and decent antenna placement, but the moment you introduce rolling terrain or equipment sheds it drops off pretty fast. For a few hundred acres you're probably fine without mesh if your base station is elevated, but I'd still plan your topology assuming you'll want at least one repeater node as a fallback - learned that the hard way on a similar ag deployment last spring.

Keith's numbers match what I've been seeing too - and honestly for a few hundred acres I'd just budget for one elevated gateway node in the middle of your spread rather than fighting the link budget from the edge, you get way better coverage that way. The shed/terrain thing is real, even a slight rise in the land can kill 3-4km of your effective range without you realising it until you're already deployed.

Agree with both of the above - and one thing that really helped on my last deployment was doing a quick terrain profile check in Google Earth before I even touched the hardware, saved me from putting the gateway in a spot that looked fine on a map but had a ridge blocking half the field. Also worth noting the antenna orientation on the Pro+ matters more than most people expect, I've seen 2-3km swings just from tilting the base station antenna a few degrees off vertical.

Rodney's point on antenna orientation is huge and I don't think it gets talked about enough - I actually started taping a small bubble level to my base station mast during installs after wasting half a day on a deployment where the antenna had a maybe 10 degree lean and I couldn't figure out why one corner of the field was dropping packets. For your acreage I'd honestly just go elevated center gateway from the start rather than trying to stretch range from the edge, the geometry works out way better and you'll thank yourself when you're not chasing dead zones in month two.

One more thing worth adding to what I said earlier - if you do go elevated center gateway, even getting it up 4-5 meters on a simple pole makes a noticeable difference vs just roof-mounting it on a shed, the fresnel zone clearance alone is worth the extra effort. I've had deployments where that extra height basically doubled the usable coverage area in practice.

Jumping on what Charles said about height - on my last agri deployment I threw the gateway on a 6m telescoping mast and the coverage difference vs the 3m option was genuinely surprising, way more than the math suggests it should be. For a few hundred acres you're probably fine with a single elevated center node if the terrain is reasonably flat, just do the Google Earth terrain profile thing Rodney mentioned before you commit to a mounting spot.
