Been playing around with the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module for a project I'm building - basically a low-bandwidth telemetry link between a base station and some remote sensor nodes scattered across a rural property. The 50km range spec is obviously what caught my eye, but I'm trying to get a realistic picture of what that number actually means in practice before I commit to this hardware for the whole deployment.
My assumption is the 50km figure is under ideal line-of-sight conditions, probably flat terrain, clear sky, matched antennas on both ends, the whole deal. What I'm wondering is whether anyone has tested this in a more suburban or semi-rural environment where you've got some tree lines, low hills, maybe occasional buildings in the way. Like is the effective range still in the tens of kilometers in those conditions, or does it fall off a cliff once you lose clean LOS? I'm not expecting the full 50km obviously, just trying to gauge whether it's still meaningfully long-range for non-ideal deployments.
Also curious what antenna setup people are actually running on the base station side. I've got room to mount something decent there, but the sensor nodes need to stay compact so I'm probably stuck with a small whip or PCB trace antenna on those ends. Does the asymmetry between a high-gain base antenna and a basic node antenna cause any weird issues with the link, or does the module's RF front-end handle that gracefully? Any real-world numbers from actual installs would be really appreciated here, even rough ones.
