MultiNav Pro+ BLE at 50km - line of sight only or does it work in urban?

So I've been spec-ing out a project where I need to maintain a BLE link across a pretty wide area - think semi-rural, some low buildings, a few trees, not exactly open field but not dense city either. The 50km range on the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module caught my eye obviously, but I'm trying to figure out how much of that number is contingent on basically perfect line of sight conditions. Like is this a "mount it on a tower and you're golden" situation, or does it hold up reasonably well with some terrain and light obstruction in between?

@David Smith good question and honestly a really common one when people first see that 50km number.
 
So to be straight with you — that 50km figure is the drone-to-drone spec, meaning both modules are airborne with no ground reflections and essentially clean sky between them. The ground-to-ground number is 5km, and the man-to-drone (one end elevated, one on the ground) sits at 15-20km. Those three numbers tell you most of what you need to know about how heavily the spec depends on elevation and clearance.
 
For your semi-rural scenario with low buildings and some trees, you're going to be somewhere in the middle. BLE at 2.4GHz doesn't punch through terrain the way lower-frequency RF does — foliage and buildings will eat into your link budget, though scattered low obstructions are nowhere near as punishing as dense urban canyon environments. If you can get even modest elevation on one or both ends (rooftop mount, small mast, elevated structure), you'll recover a lot of that margin. The receiver sensitivity and external amp design on the MultiNav is doing real work here, so you're not starting from a bad place like you would with a commodity module.
 
Realistically for your described environment, I'd plan around the 5km ground-level figure as your conservative floor and expect meaningfully better with any elevation advantage. If you want to share more specifics about the deployment geometry — like whether you can get one node up high — I can probably help you think through what's achievable.

Honestly that 50km figure is very much a best-case LOS number - in your semi-rural scenario with scattered obstacles you're realistically looking at maybe 20-30% of that before you start seeing packet loss creep up, so worth factoring that into your link budget early. I've had decent results in similar terrain by bumping TX power and being thoughtful about antenna placement/height, but I wouldn't bank on anywhere near 50km without basically clear sky between nodes.

Richard's numbers track with what I've seen too - tbh in that kind of mixed terrain I'd plan your link budget around 10-15km as a conservative working figure and treat anything beyond that as a bonus. Antenna height really does do a lot of the heavy lifting here, even getting your node up an extra 5-6m can make a noticeable diff in how obstacles affect your effective range.
