MultiNav Pro+ BLE at 50km - what's the realistic indoor/suburban range?

So I've been super excited about the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module and the 50km range spec is obviously the headline feature. I get that 50km is probably line-of-sight under ideal RF conditions, open field, clear sky, minimal interference etc. But I'm building a project that's going to be deployed in a suburban neighborhood - think houses, trees, parked cars, the usual urban clutter - and I'm trying to set realistic expectations before I commit to this as my comms layer.

@Sarah Rodriguez yeah, this is exactly the right question to ask before committing to a comms layer — good instinct.
 
The 50km figure is drone-to-drone, both units elevated and clear of ground reflections. For your suburban deployment, the ground-to-ground spec is the more relevant number, which is 5km under good conditions. In a suburban environment with houses, trees, and parked cars breaking line-of-sight, you're realistically looking at somewhere in the 500m–2km range depending on how dense the obstruction is and how you're mounting the modules. Getting them elevated even a few meters — rooftop, second floor window, pole mount — makes a significant difference because you're clearing the worst of the multipath interference.
 
The honest answer is: still massively better than anything else at this price point (commodity BLE tops out around 80–100m in open air, let alone suburban), but plan your architecture around the ground-to-ground figure with an obstruction penalty, not the drone-to-drone headline number.

Honestly for suburban with houses and trees you're probably looking at somewhere in the 200-500m ballpark in practice, maybe pushing 1km if you've got good line of sight down a street - the 50km is very much a "perfect world" number. I'd prototype with a couple modules and just walk the route you're planning before you commit, that'll tell you way more than any spec sheet.

Richard's numbers sound about right from my experience - I'd actually lean toward the lower end of that range in dense suburban if you've got 2-story houses and mature trees breaking up LOS constantly. One thing worth factoring in is antenna placement and height, even getting your node up a meter or two off the ground can make a surprisingly big difference in practice.

Both Richard and Charles are on point - I'd add that if you're doing any kind of mesh or multi-hop setup you can actually stretch that effective coverage quite a bit even in dense suburban, so worth thinking about your topology early rather than treating each node as a point-to-point link. Also antenna orientation matters more than people realize with BLE at these power levels, omnidirectional vs. a bit of gain in the right direction can swing your real-world numbers pretty significantly.

Jumping in late here but wanted to add - in my own testing with similar BLE modules in a typical SoCal suburb (single story houses, decent tree cover) I was pretty consistently getting 300-400m reliable range with modules at about chest height, bumped to closer to 600-700m once I got the antennas up around 2m. Robert's mesh point is huge tho, once I switched from thinking point-to-point to overlapping mesh nodes my coverage headaches mostly went away.
