MultiNav Pro+ BLE - does the RF front-end need any external matching at 50km?

Been digging into the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module for a long-range telemetry project and I'm trying to understand what's actually happening on the RF side to hit that 50km figure. Like, is the front-end self-contained with the matching network already tuned on the module, or is there an expectation that the end user needs to do external impedance matching depending on their antenna choice? I've burned myself before on modules that technically spec out at crazy range but quietly assume you're using a specific antenna with specific trace geometry, and if you deviate even slightly the performance tanks.</TITLE>
 
Specifically I'm planning to use a small yagi pointed at a fixed base station from a moving asset, and I'm not sure if the module output is already set up for 50 ohm direct connection or if there's some tuning I need to account for. The datasheet I found doesn't go super deep on the RF front-end topology, or maybe I missed it - if someone has a link to a more detailed hardware integration guide that'd be great too.
 
Also curious if anyone's actually done a real deploy pushing the long range mode and what link margin looked like in practice. I get that 50km is probably LOS ideal conditions, I'm not expecting miracles, just trying to figure out if this is realistic for a 5-10km semi-rural deployment with a couple obstacles in the path. Any feedback from people who've actually benched this thing would be really appreciated.

@Robert Garcia yeah this is exactly the right question to ask before committing to an antenna setup, and honestly good on you for being skeptical upfront — most people don't ask until after they've torched their link budget.
 
The RF front-end on the MultiNav Pro+ is designed with a 50 ohm output, so a direct connection to a 50 ohm antenna like a yagi is what you want and you shouldn't need external matching as long as your feedline and connector are reasonably clean. The matching network is already on the module, which is part of how they're hitting those sensitivity numbers without expecting you to do RF voodoo on your end. That said, if you're using any length of coax between the module and the yagi, keep an eye on your connector quality — at 2.4GHz even a mediocre SMA joint will eat into your margin more than you'd expect.
 
For your actual use case — 5-10km semi-rural with a couple obstacles — honestly that sounds very achievable. The 50km figure is drone-to-drone with both units elevated and no ground reflection garbage to deal with. Ground-to-ground is rated at 5km, but that assumes omnidirectional antennas on both ends. If you're running a yagi on the moving asset side pointed at a fixed base, you're adding directional gain into the link budget which should more than compensate for a few soft obstacles like vegetation or rolling terrain. You're essentially working in the middle of the performance envelope with a configuration that's better than the ground-to-ground baseline, so I'd be surprised if 5-10km gave you trouble.
 
For deeper integration docs, your best bet is to head into the RFOXiA Club resources section — the hardware integration guides there go further than the public datasheet. If you're not already in the Club it's free to sign up and there's actual SDK and technical documentation in there that doesn't live anywhere else. Would also be worth posting your specific deployment geometry there because Moamen (the founder) does engage directly on technical threads and he's the one who actually designed the RF front-end, so you'd be getting the answer straight from the source.

The MultiNav Pro+ has the matching network integrated on-module and the RF port is already presented at 50Ω, so you're not expected to do any external matching as long as you're feeding it a 50Ω antenna - that 50km figure is tested against a half-wave dipole in open field conditions though, so if you're running a whip or a patch you'll want to account for any impedance deviation there or you'll leave a lot of link budget on the table. What antenna are you planning to use, because that'll change the answer a bit?

Elizabeth nailed it - just to add, if you're going with a patch antenna make sure you're checking the VSWR across your operating band and not just at centre frequency, because I've seen the MultiNav's front end get pretty unhappy when VSWR climbs above 2:1 at the band edges and your effective range tanks way before you'd expect it to. What freq are you operating at btw, 868 or 915?
