MultiNav Pro+ BLE - using directional antennas on both ends, any experience?

Hey all, working on a point-to-point telemetry link for a fixed outdoor installation - think one node on a rooftop and the other at a remote sensor station maybe 30-40km out. I've been running the MultiNav Pro+ BLE module with the stock omnidirectional antenna setup and getting decent results but I'm wondering if anyone has swapped to high-gain directional antennas on both ends and what kind of difference it actually made in practice. I get that the module itself is doing the heavy RF lifting but there's gotta be meaningful link margin gains from adding even a modest Yagi or panel antenna at each end, right?

Ran almost exactly this setup last year on a water monitoring deployment - swapped to a pair of 12dBi Yagis on both ends and honestly the link stability improvement was night and day, especially in marginal weather conditions where the omnis were dropping packets pretty regularly. The tricky part is your alignment has to be solid since you lose the forgiving coverage pattern of the omni, so I'd budget time for proper boresighting before you commit the mounts. If your nodes are truly fixed that's mostly a one-time headache though.

@Andrew Lewis yeah, the physics absolutely backs you up here — antenna gain stacks on both ends so you're looking at combined link budget improvements that can be pretty substantial. The module's already doing a lot of work on receiver sensitivity and output power, but directional gain on top of that is essentially free margin you'd be leaving on the table otherwise.
 
The water monitoring example in that thread is a good real-world data point. 12dBi Yagis on both ends of a fixed link at that distance is a pretty solid choice — you're getting the gain where it matters without going overboard on beamwidth to the point where thermal expansion of the mounts becomes an alignment problem. For 30-40km on a fixed installation I'd probably look at panel antennas over Yagis just for the mechanical robustness in outdoor conditions, but either way the alignment discipline is the same.
 
One thing worth thinking about specifically with the MultiNav Pro+ is that you're already operating at a sensitivity floor that's well below what most BLE hardware can do, so the directional gain improvement will show up most noticeably in weather margin and link consistency rather than raw range extension — which sounds like exactly what your deployment needs.
